The improper disposal of plastic waste poses a significant problem in Kampala, as highlighted by NEMA
(National Environment Management Authority). Each day, 28,000 tons of plastic waste are freely
disposed of without a functional garbage disposal system in place. This results in less than half of the
plastic waste being collected, leaving 51% uncollected and scattered on the ground. Shockingly, only 1%
of the plastic waste undergoes formal recycling. As a consequence, vast quantities of plastic end up
being haphazardly discarded in open environments or burned, leading to severe health and
environmental hazards.
Eduplastics is a women led social enterprise driven by the mission to fight plastic waste through
innovative recycling. We transform discarded plastics into high-quality school learning materials, making
practical education accessible to rural and refugee children in underserved communities. By providing
eco-friendly and affordable resources, we empower students to learn while promoting sustainability.
Our unique model creates green jobs for women who manage the recycling Cycle, supports local
economies, and cultivates environmental stewardship. Eduplastics is more than just a business - it's a
movement to reimagine plastic waste as an opportunity to transform lives and build a greener future in
Uganda and Africa at large.
